Codex Installation
Install OpenAI Codex CLI, the desktop app, or the official VS Code extension on macOS and Windows, then connect with Passion8 API-key configuration.
For local Codex access through Passion8, install → configure the Passion8 URL, API key, and enabled Responses model → restart → verify a request. An OpenAI account or browser OAuth is not required. If you mainly work in VS Code, Cursor, or Windsurf, go directly to official Codex extension installation and setup; a standalone CLI is not required.
Codex has three common entry points:
| Entry point | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Codex CLI | Run an agent in your terminal for development and repository tasks |
| Desktop client | Manage projects, conversations and diffs visually |
| Official IDE extension | Integrate with supported VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf and JetBrains editors |
After installation, follow Configuration to connect to Passion8.
#Install Codex CLI
Codex CLI is distributed through npm. Install Node.js LTS first.
#1. Install Node.js LTS
brew install node
node -v
npm -vWithout Homebrew, download a supported LTS installer from nodejs.org. Homebrew's unversioned node package may track the current release rather than LTS; check the version you install.
#2. Install Codex CLI
npm install -g @openai/codex
codex --version#1. Install Node.js LTS
winget install OpenJS.NodeJS.LTS
node -v
npm -vWithout winget, download the installer from nodejs.org. Reopen PowerShell after installation so PATH changes take effect.
#2. Install Codex CLI
npm install -g @openai/codex
codex --versionIf PowerShell blocks the .ps1 wrapper, use npm.cmd and codex.cmd instead of changing the machine-wide execution policy.
If codex is not found after installation, open a new terminal or PowerShell window and check that npm's global executable directory is on PATH.
Installing the CLI only makes the command available. Set the Passion8 base URL and key in Configuration.
#Install the desktop client
Download: Codex App.
After installation, open Codex from Applications or Launchpad.
Open your local project folder. Start with default permissions and raise them only after understanding the workflow.
Run the installer or use:
winget install Codex -s msstoreOpen Codex from the Start menu.
Open your local project folder. Start with default permissions before expanding access.
For Passion8, the desktop client's base URL also includes /v1: https://passion8.cc/v1. Use a Passion8 API key.
#Install the official IDE extension
Install the OpenAI-published Codex extension in a supported VS Code, Cursor, Windsurf or JetBrains editor. Availability depends on the editor and its current marketplace.
Open Extensions with Cmd+Shift+X on macOS or Ctrl+Shift+X on Windows.
Search for Codex and install the extension published by OpenAI.
Restart the editor, then open Codex from the sidebar or command palette.
Open Plugins in your supported IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, WebStorm, Rider or other JetBrains IDE.
Find and install the official OpenAI Codex plugin available for that IDE.
Restart the IDE and open Codex from its sidebar or command palette.
The IDE extension generally uses the local Codex configuration. Complete Configuration and write both auth.json and config.toml before connecting to Passion8. Remote editors and WSL use the runtime's own user directory.
