# Codex Desktop app

> Codex: Install the desktop client, configure Passion8, manage projects, permissions, agents and diffs.

URL: https://docs.passion8.cc/en/docs/codex/app
Language: en
Publisher: Passion8

The desktop app helps manage agents, inspect diffs and switch projects. For a supported custom-provider client, configure your Passion8 key and compatible endpoint.

The desktop base URL also includes `/v1`: `https://passion8.cc/v1`. Use a Passion8 token from the [console](https://passion8.cc).

## Download and install

### Download

Download the current macOS or Windows client from the official entry point:

[Download Codex App](https://chatgpt.com/codex/download).

### Configure the custom provider

Use the API-key/custom-provider setup rather than ChatGPT account sign-in:

- **API key:** your Passion8 token.
- **Base URL:** `https://passion8.cc/v1`.
- **Model:** an enabled Codex / Responses model from the [catalog](https://passion8.cc).

If the installed UI does not expose these fields, configure the local files as described in [Configuration](https://docs.passion8.cc/en/docs/codex/config) and restart the client.

### Create a project

Create a project and choose its local folder. Use a separate directory for each project to avoid editing unrelated files.

## A useful first task

Let Codex inspect the project before asking it to make a focused change:

```text
Inspect this folder and tell me what you see.
Then suggest one small task you can complete safely.
Wait for my approval before making changes.
```

Start with default permissions. Use full permissions only when you understand the commands and files involved.

## Approvals and permissions

The app and CLI share the concepts of approval policy and sandbox. The app may present these as switches or menus:

| Mode | Suitable use |
| --- | --- |
| Read-only / explicit approval | Unfamiliar projects and initial exploration |
| Workspace writable | Work within a selected local project |
| Full access | Controlled, trusted and recoverable environments |

These correspond conceptually to `approval_policy` and `sandbox_mode`. See [Advanced usage: approvals and sandbox](https://docs.passion8.cc/en/docs/codex/tips#approvals-and-sandbox).

## Desktop workflows

The app makes these workflows easier to inspect visually:

- [Multiple agents](https://docs.passion8.cc/): Run separate tasks in separate threads and switch between them. Isolate conflicting file edits with worktrees.
- [Visual diff review](https://docs.passion8.cc/): Inspect changes file by file before accepting or committing them.
- [Project switching](https://docs.passion8.cc/): Switch between projects with separate directories and conversation histories.
- [Conversation history](https://docs.passion8.cc/): Revisit conversations and change records to review or recover work.

Local desktop and CLI workflows can share the same user's ~/.codex configuration. Provider and profile support depends on the client version. WSL, remote users and containers use separate runtime directories.
